The New Group

Artistic and Educational Partnership

The LIU Brooklyn BFA Acting program offers studio-based Acting, Voice and Movement classes in partnership with The New Group, a renowned Off-Broadway theatre company based in Manhattan. BFA Acting students travel to studios in midtown Manhattan on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to study with accomplished actors, directors and content creators, all of whom are working members of the acting industry and have extensive educational credentials.

Studio classes are sequential, and are designed to provide students with an immersive education in various styles of performance including Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, Michael Chekhov and Sanford Meisner (Acting); Kristin Linklater, Patsy Rodenburg, Merry Conway (Voice); Laban, Butoh and Clowning (Movement). The program presents students with an inclusive approach; rather than focusing on a single technique, instructors are encouraged to expose students to multiple techniques and to craft an acting/voice/movement technique that works for the individual actor. This approach allows us to meet our students where they are, and to build an acting technique that will resonate with them long after they have completed their LIU training.

Jason Kravitz & John Turturro: SABBATH'S THEATER

Studying under the studio model with a professional theatre company, students immerse themselves in the artistic process as it is actually practiced, as well as in the business side of New York theater. In addition to attending Studio classes, our collaboration with The New Group allows students to immerse themselves in the New York City artistic community, networking with industry professionals, attending Off-Broadway performances, and participating in masterclasses and talkbacks with artists at the top of their field. Recent guest lecturers include Jesse Eisenberg, Myha’la and John Turturro.

New Group Studio classes begin in the First Year, allowing students to experience the craft of acting from the moment they arrive on campus.
